Wiener Neustadt

Wiener Neustadt, closely located to Vienna is the second largest city in Lower Austria with around 40,000 inhabitants. The more than 800 year-old city (founded in 1194) was the Emperor’s residence for many years. Still today there are numerous historical buildings in the inner city from this era. One of the most remarkable buildings of this era is the Theresian Military Academy, the oldest military academy of the world. Wiener Neustadt was founded by the Babenbergers with parts of the ransom money from the English King Richard the Lionheart. The reason for founding the “new town” was essentially that the rulers at the time wanted to erect a stronghold against the East. Through Maximilian I the city achieved great fame. The Emperor is buried in the St. George Cathedral in the military academy.

In 2019 Wiener Neustadt is the place of venue for the State Exhibition of Lower Austria with the Kasematten Centres, The Museum of St. Peter an der Sperr, military academy and Neukloster. From 2020, the new museum St. Peter an der Sperr will become home to the city museum, the military academy and the Neukloster (abbey) will also remain open to the public. The Kasematten, an historically unique underground weir system with roots dating back to the 12th century, have become a large cultural, conference and event centre.

In addition, it is an ideal starting point for excursions to the Schneeberg, the Rax, the mountain Hohe Wand or the Semmering as well as into the Biedermeier Valley, to the Neusiedler See (lake) and of course to Vienna.
