Neustadt an der Orla

Away from the big tourist towns, in the middle of a cultural landscape between Saalfeld and Gera lies Neustadt an der Orla. With its medieval, listed city centre, it has extraordinary attractions to visit. The harmonious layout of the spacious market square with its late Gothic municipal building is always a special delight for visitors. One place visitors should not pass by is the city church of St. Johannis with its famous altar from the workshop of Lucas Cranach the Elder. In the passage from the market to the church square you find the historical Fleischbänke, a medieval strip of butcher shops. At the church square you find the small, museum carefully designed to reflect the city’s history.

For hiking buffs, Neustadt an der Orla is the ideal starting point with a stimulating and due to its geological properties a very diverse landscape. The Bismarck Tower, in the middle of the serene forest is worth an excursion with its panoramic view over the Orlasenke

At the traditional festivals such as the fountain festival “Bornquas” and the “Duhlendorfer Karneval” the city welcomes thousands of guests each year.
