Nové Mesto nad Váhom

The city Nové Mesto nad Váhom is located in the attractive Wag area on the Váh in a fertile lowland, which borders the last foothills of the Small Carpathians and the Povaźský Inovec Mountains. The city has an optimal location, the distances to Bratislava (the capital of Slovakia) and to the Austrian and Hungarian boarders are only approx. 100 km by car, to the Czech border it is only approx. 15 km. The city is an economic, cultural and administrative centre of the Podjavorina region and the county of Nové Mesto nad Váhom.

The city was first documented on 18 March 1263 as King Belo IV granted it town privileges. Today - after reconstruction of the town centre - Nové Mesto is really new. Valuable culturally historical monuments, like the Roman Catholic church (originally a Roman basilica), the Plague column from the 17th century or St. Florian (a statue from the 18th century) in the town centre.

The great Funfair, occurring annually on the third weekend of September attracts many visitors. Also the surrounding areas have many excursion destinations like the castles Trenčin, Beckov, Čachtice and Tematin as well as many beauties of nature. Thelocal recreation area Zelená voda offers attractive opportunities for a great vacation. The nearby ski centres Kálnica, Javorina and Bezovec are excellent venues for skiing in winter.
