Nové Mésto nad Metuji

The city of Nové Město nad Metují in Northeast Bohemia, not far from the Polish border, is one of the centres in the foreland of the Orlické or Eagle Mountains. The position of the historical town centre on a ledge surrounded by the Metuje River gives the city its characteristic flair.

The historical centre is a jewel among the Czech renaissance cities and became a protected historical monument in 1970. This also includes the Castle of the Bartoň von Dobenín family in the western corner of the market square. The cornerstone of the city and the castle was laid in 1501 by Jan Černčický von Kácov, the latest renovation of the castle was executed by the famous Slovakian Architect Dušan Jurkovič. The city centre is truly unique by design. Between the houses directly on the market square and the second row of houses the Zadomí alleyways evolved which makes it possible to bypass the entire square. Here in the Zadomí the city museum is located in the old artillery bastion from the 16th century. In addition there is also Zázvorka Tower and the neighbouring House No. 1210, that was erected in the 16th century as an Arrest and Guardhouse at the city wall which protected the city. After the reconstruction was completed in 2001 the city gallery found its place here.
